An Eddy Current Testing Machine, a highly developed non-destructive testing (NDT) device, is able to spot surface and sub-surface defects in conductive materials without any contact. The apparatus is based on electromagnetic induction. The main element of the system is a probe with a coil inside it. The passage of an alternating current through this coil creates a magnetic field. When the probe approaches a conductive test piece made of aluminum, copper, or steel, this magnetic field inducing changes leads to the generation of circular electric currents in the metal referred to as eddy currents. Any kind of discontinuity, such as a crack, rusting, or variation in thickness, causes disturbance in the proper flow of these currents.
